Summer is traditionally the heaviest driving season. When drivers take to the road, they are often unaware that their vehicles are being exposed to environmental hazards such as the sun, acid rain, dirt, tree sap, tar, air pollution and bird droppings, all of which can wreck havoc on a car’s exterior.

Because these forces of nature are often unavoidable, experts say it’s important to wash and wax your car on a regular basis to help protect and maintain the exterior’s natural color.

Turtle Wax, Inc., which makes a variety of car care products, suggests the following for summer car care:

Before waxing, wash your car thoroughly. Scrub off dirt and road grime with a car wash concentrate. Never use dish washing detergent or household cleaners to wash your car; they can strip wax and dull your car’s finish.

Waxing helps protect a car’s finish. Simply wipe on and wipe dry. It dries clear and won’t leave deposits on your car’s surfaces or trim, providing a shine and protection from the elements.

Tires also demand attention. They take the toughest beating and are the hardest surfaces on a car to keep clean. Proper tire care can help reduce sidewall cracking caused by aging and exposure to extreme weather conditions.
