Lawrence E. Newcomb, a Los Altos resident, died May 7 in Redwood City. He was 79.

Mr. Newcomb was a retired hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

He is survived by his wife, Sara; children, John and Cynthia; stepchildren, Stephen Hay, Laura Bridge and Margot Capers; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, at Unitarian Universalist Church, 505 E. Charleston Road, Palo Alto.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church (Lawrence E. Newcomb Fund) or to the Environmental Volunteers, 3921 East Bayshore Road, Palo Alto, CA 94303.

Jean Lichtenstein

Jean Lichtenstein, a 40-year resident of Los Altos, died April 9.

A native of Fairfield, Conn., Mrs. Lichtenstein attended the Bridgeport School of Nursing and became the first pediatric nurse to serve at the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at New York University, the nation’s first physical rehabilitation center.

Mrs. Lichtenstein was a supporter of the public library and volunteered with the PTA and Girl Scouts.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Tamara, Jude, Barbara and David; and three granddaughters.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Woodland branch of the Los Altos Library and El Camino Hospital.

Howard Leavitt Turner

Howard Leavitt Turner, a Los Altos resident, died May 5. He was 79.

Mr. Turner was a graduate of Santa Clara University. In 1944 he began a lifelong career in aviation, joining the flight research branch of NACA, which later became NASA. He culminated his career at NASA as chief of the airworthiness assurance branch. He also served in the Navy at Moffett Field Naval Air Station during World War II.

In his leisure time, Mr. Turner was an enthusiastic stream and deep sea fisherman and hunter, and enjoyed taking photographs as he flew over the central Sierras in his son-in-law Allen Settle’s Cessna.

Mr. Turner is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane; children, Kathi Settle, Kristi and Marc; sister, Naomi Lind; and grandsons, Scott and Matthew Settle, and R.J. and Daniel Turner.

Funeral services were held.

Stanley B. Murray

Stanley B. Murray died May 10 in Los Altos. He was 83.

A native of San Francisco, Mr. Murray was a vice president at MJB Coffee. He was the husband of the late Lois Marie Murray.

Mr. Murray is survived by his children, Janice Down of Los Altos, David and John; and grandchildren, Debbie Ritchie and Kelly, John and Kate Murray.

Malcolm James

Malcolm James, a 40-year resident of Los Altos, died May 13 after a long illness. He was 81.

A native of Easton, Pa., Mr. James attended Bucknell University and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. An industrial engineer, he worked for Safeway Stores until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. James served in the U.S. Army during and after World War II and helped reopen the port of Yokohama, Japan. In retirement, he volunteered with the Service Corps of Retired Executives.

Mr. James is survived by his wife of 50 years, Diane; children, Karen Tracy and Kevin; and three grandsons.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Scholarship Fund, Bucknell University, Gift Processing Department, Cooley Hall, 82 University Avenue, Lewisburg, PA 17837.

Jeanne Klein

Jeanne Klein died May 15 in Chico. She was 77.

A Chicago native, Mrs. Klein was a member of the Los Altos Sewing Circle.

She is survived by her sons William of Los Altos and James; sisters, Helen Hurley, Catherine Calcagno and Jules Fantetti; and five grandchildren. Her husband, Tom Klein, and son Thomas Klein Jr. predeceased her.

Services were held. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Nicholas Development Fund.

Olga Damassa

Olga Damassa died April 21 in Mountain View. A native of Pennsylvania, she was 79.

Mrs. Damassa was a homemaker.

She was the widow of Paschal “Pat” Damassa. She is survived by children, Donna Teresi, David Damassa and Joe Damassa; siblings, Anne Ziss and John Kobaly; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Winifred Bell died May 6. She was 75.

Mrs. Bell graduated from Burbank High and worked at the Lockheed Aircraft Plant during World War II. She moved to Sunnyvale in 1958 with the creation of the Lockheed operations in Sunnyvale.

Mrs. Bell is survived by her two children, Raymond and Marjorie Garrod; her sister Connie; and four grandchildren, Melissa, Luke, Sarah and Walter.
