By 'Xerox Alto' subject of talk

Chuck Thacker and Butler Lampson of Microsoft Corp. will speak on “The Xerox Alto: A Personal Retrospective,” Monday at NASA Ames Main Auditorium (Building 201), Moffett Federal Airfield, Mountain View. A reception will follow in the Computer Museum History Center’s Visible Storage Exhibit Area (Building 126).

Thirty years ago, the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center created a paradigm shift in computing. Many of the technologies that make today’s personal computers attractive, including high-quality graphical user interface and laser printing, were mature technologies at the center by the end of the 1970s. The platform on which many of these technologies were developed was the Alto personal computer.

In this talk, Thacker and Lampson will describe a few of the applications and technologies the Alto enabled.

Advance reservations are required in order to be admitted to Moffett Federal Airfield. Make reservations by Thursday with Wendy Ann Francis, 604-5205 or francis@computerhistory.org.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
