De Anza Division meet

Although Los Gatos dominated last Thursday’s SCVAL De Anza Division Championships by winning both the boys and girls team titles, several athletes from Los Altos and St. Francis performed well enough to make the North Sub-Section meet.

The Los Altos boys placed fifth (38 points) and will be represented in nine events on Saturday. The top six finishers in each event at Thursday’s meet, hosted by De Anza College, qualified for the Sub-Section.

Joey Toney took second in both the long jump (19-9) and 300 hurdles (40.8); Mark Horiuchi placed third in the 110 hurdles (16.0) and fourth in the 100 dash (11.4); Aaron Kaye finished fourth in the 1,600 run (4:29) and sixth in the 800 (2:00.9); and Dawen Tsien was fifth in the long jump (19-0) and sixth in the 110 hurdles (16.7). The Eagle’s 1,600 relay team came in fifth (3:42).

On the girls’ side, St. Francis finished second (77) and Los Altos sixth (32).

Los Altos’ top performer was Allie Miller, who placed second in both the 100 hurdles (15.9) and 300 hurdles (47.2). Laura Perry was third in the 800 run (2:26), Heather Phillippe came in fifth in the 300 hurdles (48.7) and Becca Burnham was fifth in the triple jump (32-5).

The Eagles’ 1,600 relay team of Phillippe, Miller, Kelsey Alloo and Perry came in third with a season-best time of 4:13.

The St. Francis girls will participate in 11 events this weekend, including both relays.

Five Lancers qualified in multiple individual events: Natasha Buxton placed second in the triple jump (34-10 1/2) and fifth in the high jump (5-2); Kristen Mulenberg took second in the discus (102-2) and fifth in the shot put (29-1); Annie Leemhuis finished second in the 100 dash (12.67) and third in the in the 200 (26.38); Elizabeth Burke was third in the shot put (30-9) and sixth in the discus (91-2 1/2); and MacKenzie Griffith came in fourth in both the triple jump (33-8) and long jump (15-8 1/2).

Other individual qualifiers include Natalie Nunn in the 400 (fourth, 1:01.91), Julia Gordon in the 3,200 (fourth, 12:10.40), Jessica Shannon in the long jump (fourth, 16-2) and Chelsea Voss in the 400 (sixth, 1:03.08).

WCAL meet

Windy weather made for less than ideal conditions at the SCVAL El Camino Division Championships last week at Santa Clara High.

Still, Mountain View High coach Sam Read wasn’t disappointed with the way her athletes performed.

“Despite the hurricane force winds at Santa Clara (on May 2), we had a great competition,” said Read, noting that the Spartans placed second on the girls’ side and fourth among the boys.

The girls racked up 113 points, finishing a close second to Milpitas (116). The boys tallied 68 points to place behind Santa Clara (133), Milpitas (74) and Cupertino (69).

The Mountain View girls, who edged Milpitas by a point in a dual meet last month, will share the division title with the Trojans. This marks the second straight year the Spartans have finished as co-champs and gone undefeated in the dual meet season (5-0).

By placing among the top three in their respective events, nine Mountain View girls have qualified for the Central Coast Section North Sub-Section meet, set for noon, Saturday, at Los Gatos High.

Dawn Maxey and Adrianna Palmer have each qualified in two individual events. Maxey, a freshman, won the 100-meter hurdles (16.65 seconds) and took second in the 100 dash (12.86). Palmer was second in the 300 hurdles (49.58) and third in the 100 hurdles (16.91).

Other individual qualifiers include Kathy Santoso in the triple jump (first, 34-feet-9) freshman Lisa Griego in the 800 run (second, 2:30.04), Linda Ansa in the long jump (third, 16-1/4 inches), freshman Laura Baldwin in the 400 run (third, 1:03.72) and Laurie Russo in the high jump (third, 4-8). The mile relay team of Palmer, Emilie Allen, Baldwin and Emilie Doolittle also made the cut, finishing third with a 4:30.31.

Mountain View will be sending six boys to the Sub-Section, with four of them qualifying in multiple events.

Individually, Richard Turner won both the 400 run (52.46) and long jump (21-1 3/4). Fellow junior Trevor Hooper placed second in the long jump (20-4), while David Young finished third in the two-mile run (10:55.69).

Both relay teams also qualified. The mile team of Guillermo Moreira, Steven Ragan, Young and Turner came in second (3:39.12). The 400 team of Lewis Hall, Turner, Moreira and Hooper took third (45.86).

The St. Francis boys (90) were second to Bellarmine (191) at Friday’s West Catholic Athletic League Championships.

The Lancers will be represented in nine events at Saturday’s North Sub-Section. Chris Chisam, Will Faules, Ian Kenworthy and Brad Libuit have qualified in two events each.
