The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School Board of Trustees made the appropriate findings when they voted to expel two Los Altos High School students in March, according to Brigitte Sarraf, associate superintendent of the Mountain View-Los Altos Union School District.

Both students were involved with bringing a pellet gun to the school campus on March 12.

“One was in possession of the gun, and the investigation revealed that the other might be the owner of the gun. That still isn’t clear,” Sarraf said.

This is the first offense of this kind for both, she said. “Both students were expelled this semester and the following semester. The earliest they can come back is spring semester 2001-2002,” Sarraf said.

“It’s not a mandatory expulsion, since it was not a real gun but a BB gun. But it was mandatory that an expulsion recommendation be made to the board,” Sarraf said. “The board made the appropriate findings to expel.”

By law, the students cannot attend school in the MV-LA School District and are instead attending a county community school. They have to follow very detailed rules in order to be accepted back into the district.

“They have to show good academic progress; have no violation of the ed-code, meaning no suspendable or expellable behavior; have good attendance; stay on track for graduation and go to counseling,” Sarraf said.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
