Radio amateurs or “hams” across the nation will celebrate Field Day June 23-24, when they will attempt to contact as many other hams as possible using radio stations in field conditions.

The annual event is intended to exercise amateur operating skills in conditions resembling those that might prevail after a major disaster. In emergencies, radio amateurs have rendered communication services to support public safety agencies.

The Foothills Amateur Radio Society, one of several clubs in this area, will participate in this year’s Field Day event, operating by voice, Morse code, radio teletype, satellite and digital packet radio.

The 24-hour event begins at 11 a.m. on June 23, next to the Maryknoll Residence, 23000 Cristo Rey Drive, Los Altos. Visitors will be welcome. For more information, call (408) 729-6483 or (408) 253-2580.
