The Mountain View-Los Altos PTA Council blood drive (in cooperation with the Stanford Blood Bank) is scheduled 3:30-7 p.m., Tuesday, at Slater School, 325 Gladys Ave., Mountain View.

Donors must be between 17 and 74, weigh at least 110 pounds, be well-hydrated, have eaten at least six hours prior to donating and have a photo ID. Donors with allergies and allergy medications are accepted. Donors will be deferred if they have visited or lived in the United Kingdom for a cumulative 6 months or more between 1980 and 1996. This is a recommendation of the FDA as a precaution against Mad Cow Disease.

Mountain View Teen Job Fair

The city of Mountain View Recreation Division in conjunction with Mountain View and Los Altos high schools has scheduled a free teen job fair in the Los Altos High School quad, noon to 1:30 p.m., today, and the Mountain View High School quad, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Thursday. Students will have an opportunity to meet with potential employers.

De Anza Memorial Jazz Festival

De Anza College has scheduled its 20th annual Herb Patnoe Memorial Jazz Festival May 10 and 11. The memorial celebration, featuring the Herb Patnoe Alumni All-Star Band, is set for 7 p.m., May 10, at the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, 33 E. San Fernando, San Jose.

Jazz ensembles from De Anza will present an all day concert, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., May 11, in the A Quad on campus. The Patnoe Vocal Jazz Night will close the festival with an 8 p.m. concert in building A1, room 11. Tickets will be sold at the door. General admission is $10; students and seniors, $7.

National Teacher Day celebrated Tuesday

Tuesday is designated as the 16th annual National Teacher Day. Parents, students, and businesses are encouraged to show teachers they are honored and valued.

LASD offers summer enrichment classes

The Los Altos School District will offer enrichment summer school classes this year at Loyola and Almond elementary schools June 25 through July 20. The program will feature a wide variety of learning opportunities and challenges for students entering grades 2-7 this fall.

Primary classes will include Mandarin, drama, technology exploration and art.

The upper-grade level program will include architectural design, jazz band, robotics and video production.

Brochures are available at the District Office, 201 Covington Road. The deadline for mail registration for the primary enrichment program is May 9.

Registration for the intermediate enrichment program will be at Blach School, 1120 Covington Road, May 5.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
