By First Baptist Church begins renovations

The Los Altos City Council gave the First Baptist Church of Los Altos the go-ahead last week to begin the first phase of a massive renovation project planned for the Magdalena Road site.

This first phase will include the addition of a 5,200-square-foot, two-story education wing on the south end of the site’s existing athletic center, where the church plans to house meeting rooms, a child-care center and storage space. The plan also includes the addition of 63 new parking spaces; a play area for the church’s child-care center; and landscaping for the parking areas.

The master plan for the 7.1-acre site also includes the addition of a three-story children’s education center with one level of underground parking in the future.

The First Baptist Church currently has a K-8 school and a day-care center on site.

Police crackdown on school traffic

Los Altos

Los Altos police are putting the pressure on reckless drivers in school zones this week as part of a countywide school safety program intended to educate drivers and enforce traffic laws. Officers will continue to saturate school zones and crack down on reckless drivers through Friday.

This is the second year that all law enforcement agencies in Santa Clara County, including the District Attorney’s Office, have participated in the program, Operation Safe Passage.

Police said parents, commuters and students walking to school need to know that the rules of the road do apply and will be strictly enforced.

Event organizers said the most important aspect of the program is to develop a safe and long-lasting attitude among the communities near school zones.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
