By Toxic cleanup at Moffett Field

The U.S. Navy is scheduled to hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mountain View City Hall to discuss an environmental cleanup plan for a portion of Moffett Federal Airfield. The area, Site 22 Golf Course Landfill, was a disposal area for municipal waste from 1950 to 1967.

Environmental investigations indicate that there is no current exposed waste in the area. A potential health risk exists if burrowing animals should bring buried landfill to the surface, according to a Navy press release.

As part of the cleanup, the Navy proposed installing a biotic barrier or layers of soil, gravel, cement and cobblestone in order to prevent animals from burrowing into the landfill and to minimize the potential for human exposure to the refuse. The plans include long-term monitoring of ground water and landfill gas that may be created as organic materials decompose. The Navy would also restrict future land use of the area. Public comments may be sent to Andrea Muckerman, Moffett Field BRAC Environmental Coordinator, at Southwest Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command, 1220 Pacific Highway, Code 06CH.AM, San Diego 92132-5190. Comments will be accepted until May 9.

City to upgrade Fremont bridge

Mountain View

The Los Altos City Council earlier this month earmarked $4,247 to upgrade a bridge on Portland Avenue and one on Fremont Avenue. The California Department of Transportation determned that both bridges, built between 1915 and 1920, were “functionally obsolete.” The bridges qualify for federal funding, according to a city staff report.
