Soccer, field hockey and diving are completely different sports, but they all have one thing in common at Los Altos High: Jeanette Hayman.

Hayman, a sophomore at Los Altos, has competed in varsity soccer, field hockey and diving since she arrived at the school in the fall of 1999.

Not only has Hayman competed in these sports, but she’s done so at a high level. In soccer, she was named the SCVAL De Anza Division’s Freshman of the Year in 2000 and Sophomore of the Year this past season. In field hockey, Hayman was selected Sophomore of the Year in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s West Valley Division and Central Coast Section Honorable Mention. As a diver, Hayman has qualified for next month’s CCS meet.

Even with all of these accomplishments, Hayman is most proud of her durability.

“I have broken only one bone, (which was) a fractured hip,” Hayman said.

Hayman took up competitive field hockey and diving only two years ago, but has been playing soccer since age 5.

“My brother and sister played soccer, so it was a family thing,” the Los Altos resident said.

In order to excel in three sports, Hayman dedicates plenty of time to practice.

“(I spend) seven to eight hours a week for soccer, five a week for field hockey and five a week for diving,” she said. “I don’t know (how I manage it) - it all just works out.”

With her dedication, Hayman hopes to play a sport in college, preferably at the University of California at San Diego.

“It’s my best way to get into college,” Hayman said.

However, she hasn’t yet decided which of three sports she would like to concentrate on.

“I like them all for different reasons,” Hayman said. “Soccer because I’ve been playing for so long, field hockey because it’s new, and diving because it’s just fun.”

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
