A FASHION CELEBRATION: Yes, spring is in the air! April 14 was the American Cancer Society’s Discovery Shop fashion show for spring and summer outfits.

Enthusiastic jazz lovers and shoppers packed the shop on Main Street to enjoy the music and fashions. Tapping her toes, Manager Ardy Bazarian greeted the happy customers and volunteers, “This is the first, but happily not the last ‘Spring Fling!’ Can’t you just feel and hear the good vibes?”

“The Trio,” composed of Bill Hockett( bass), Dale Nesbitt (piano) and Paul Bergevin (drums and jazz harp), generously donated their time and talent for the event.

Bobbi Tremain, a cancer survivor, and her sister, Pat Lannin, from Charlotte, N.C., were visiting their Los Altos brother, Charlie Lomax. Charlie has been a Discovery Shop volunteer for many years. His late wife also volunteered until she succumbed to cancer.

Proceeds from the store support American Cancer Society programs. For information, call 949-0505.

HIS HOLINESS, THE DALAI LAMA: An historic event will take place here “in our backyard.” His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, is scheduled to present a series of teachings over four days at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, May 17-20.

The celebrated writer, Jack Komfield, recently said of him, “Worldwide, the Dalai Lama has come to carry the hopes of humanity. He makes visible the great heart of compassion, so that we all remember that beauty, truth and justice are possible on our earth.”

Richard Gere, Chairman of Tibet House, N.Y., said, “His Holiness is heartbreakingly present and real. His words are seeds sown from his heart into ours. We need only open to receive them. May they bring happiness and the causes of future happiness.”

In his 1989 acceptance speech for the peace prize, the Dalai Lama said, “I believe all religions pursue the same goals, that of cultivating human goodness and bringing happiness to all human beings. Though the means might appear different, the ends are the same. I pray for all of us, oppressor and friend, that together we succeed in building a better world through human understanding and love, and that in doing so we may reduce the pain and suffering of all sentient beings.”

A SPECIAL GET-TOGETHER FOR DINNER: Kara, a grief counseling agency in Palo Alto, will celebrate its 25th anniversary soon. Jack and Judy Brigham, longtime supporters of Kara, hosted a dinner at the Los Altos Country Club to honor major donors who have generously offered financial support to this wonderful cause.

Meg Kay described how her 5-year-old twin daughters benefited from Kara’s children’s program after her husband was attacked and murdered on an evening walk near their home in Palo Alto. For additional information, call 321-5272.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
