Prep Baseball Wrap Up

With a holiday from league play this week because of spring break, area baseball teams last week tuned up for the final stretch of the season.

Gunn (10-2 ) - which trails Wilcox (11-0) by two games in the loss column in the SCVAL De Anza Division - was perfect last week, capturing three games. The Titans, the No. 13 ranked team in the Central Coast Section, beat Woodside 4-1, surprised St. Francis 10-2 and blasted St. Lawrence 11-1.

Greg Matson produced an impressive week by notching eight hits in the three games and earned the complete-game win over Woodside to raise his pitching record to 4-1.

Ray Hunter defeated St. Francis (14-3-1), as Gunn jumped to a 7-0 lead in the fifth inning and never blinked on its way to 12 hits. Ricky Navarro and Nick Tanaka each drove in three runs for Gunn.

Josh Lansford paced the Lancers with a double in two hits and Jimmy Buckley added a double.

St. Francis, ranked No. 3 in the section, bounced back to rout Santa Clara 12-2, as Adam Turrey (4-0) remained perfect from the mound. The Lancers banged out 14 hits, with Turrey leading the way with a triple and a double in three hits.

St. Francis will compete in the prestigious 16-team West Coast Classic this week against some of the best programs in the state. The Lancers opened first-round play on Tuesday. The title game is set for Thursday night.

St. Francis, which resumes WCAL competition next week, is in second place behind league-leading Mitty.

Los Altos (9-12 ) split a pair of games at the Monterey Tournament last week. The Eagles, which need to end the season on a roll to earn a CCS playoff berth, nipped Monterey 3-1, then lost to Pacific Grove 9-8 in six innings.

Wes Battle (5-4) earned the win over Monterey (17-4) and was helped out by Kevin Buurma’s double and two RBIs. Ronnie Remmel added two hits for the Eagles.

Raul Ontiveros belted a double and two RBIs and Matt Kramer produced a pair of hits in the loss to Pacific Grove. The game was called due to darkness after Los Altos made a furious comeback after trailing 8-2 in the third inning.

Mountain View fell to league-leading Fremont 12-5 in an SCVAL El Camino Division matchup in Sunnyvale. The Spartans faced an uphill battle by falling behind 8-0 after three innings.

Gordon Pendergrass and Brian Frassetti manufactured a double and three RBIs, respectively, for Mountain View.

Homestead (8-9) won its second-round game of the Cupertino Host Lions tournament by pounding Monta Vista 19-6. The Mustangs wasted no time getting their offense on track by leaping out to a commanding 13-4 lead after three innings.

Anthony Torres (1-2) picked up the win. Brandon Dougherty roped a homer and four RBIs in two hits. Gary Mullins chipped in with a pair of hits and three RBIs for Homestead.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
