By City to install Fremont sidewalk

The Los Altos City Council agreed last week to move forward with plans to install a sidewalk along Fremont Avenue between the Los Altos Sub-Acute & Rehabilitation Center and Manor Way.

The city applied for a $27,999 Transportation Development Act last week to fund most of the project. If approved, the city would need to kick in $9,000.

The project would include replacing the section of dirt walkway currently along the eastern side of Fremont with a sidewalk and handicap ramps.

The council approved sidewalk improvements along Fremont between Loyola Corners and Manor Way in 1996 and applied for two transportation grants earmarked for pedestrian and bicycle projects.

The city later postponed the improvements and broke the project into three phases after the council determined that the grant money was insufficient to complete the entire project.

The portion of sidewalk between the Sub-Acute center and Manor Way is Phase III of the initial project.

City expands waste program

The Los Altos City Council added $18,000 to the County Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program in order to accommodate the higher-than-expected number of Los Altos residents who have used the program this year.

The funding increase will expand the number of Los Altos households that may use the county service by 300, or up to 1,185 total households.

The city had anticipated that about 885 households would use the recycling program during 2000-2001. About 673 residents had already used the program by the end of March, according to a city staff report.

That number accounted for more than 76 percent of what the city had funded for Los Altos use until the end of this year.

City officials expected residents to exceed the remaining 213 paid slots through the end of this year, especially since historically there has been a greater increase in program use during the spring.

The county is scheduled to hold a Los Altos-based disposal event April 28. For more information, call the Los Altos City Hall at 941-1491.

Traffic controls top list of priorities

Los Altos

Traffic controls and recreation topped the Los Altos City Council’s preliminary list of budget priorities for 2001-2003.

Four of the top 10 listed priorities related to traffic controls and four related to recreation. Funding for traffic enforcement officers topped the list, followed by field maintenance, a traffic calming budget, a school anti-violence program, Blach and Egan gymnasium projects, a traffic engineer position, Internet improvements for the recreation department and civic center plan improvements.

Other budget items in the council’s preliminary list included housing options for police, increased street maintenance, improvements to the skateboard park and the exploration of more housing projects with federal grants.

The city is in the process of ironing out the 2001-2003 budget.
