San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon, a Los Altos Hills resident, allowed only one goal last Saturday night, but that’s all the Dallas Burn needed to spoil the Quakes’ Major League Soccer home opener.

Dallas jumped on the board in the 19th minute, as Bobby Rhine drove an 18-yard shot past Cannon.

San Jose missed out on a few scoring opportunities throughout the match, including a shot by rookie Chris Carrieri in the 79th minute that sailed over the crossbar.

Cannon kept the Quakes in the match in the final minutes with an impressive stop of a breakaway by Rhine.

With the Earthquakes pushed forward looking for the tying goal, Rhine got behind the defense and broke in alone on Cannon. Cannon charged out of his net and cut down the angle before smothering Rhine’s shot to keep the deficit at 1-0.

San Jose (0-2) next heads to Miami to take on the revamped Fusion at 4:30 p.m., Saturday.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
