Spring Sports Summary

Boys Tennis

Los Gatos on April 4 ended any hope Mountain View had of winning the SCVAL El Camino Division and qualifying for the CCS playoffs.

The Wildcats (11-0) posted a 6-1 home win over the Spartans (5-5). Mountain View’s No. 1 player Chris Olson lost 6-1, 6-1.

In WCAL action, St. Francis shut out St. Ignatius 7-0 April 3 at Cuesta Park. Eric Chow prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for the Lancers, who improved to 7-2 in league and 14-2 overall.

Gymnastics

St Francis opened its season with a 172.350-113.950 rout of host Gilroy last Thursday.

The Lancers won all four events and swept the vault and uneven bars.

Tess Pinard captured the all-around title with a score of 34.80.

The junior won the floor exercise (9.200) and placed second in the vault (8.600).

Corinne Allen won the vault (9.000) and the uneven bars (9.500), while Kristen Lund took first in the balance beam (8.850).

Los Altos, meanwhile, fell to 2-1 on the season with a 160.65-157.15 loss to visiting Gunn on Thursday.

Hoops tournament

Although the St. Francis High boys golf team advanced to the Central Coast Section finals last year, the Lancers weren’t satisfied with their season.

St. Francis expected to finish higher than fourth at the CCS and had designs on reaching the Northern California tournament.

With thoughts of last year’s finish still on their minds, new coach Dave Ferriera hasn’t had trouble motivating his players.

“They’re working hard and they want to do better this year,” Ferriera said. “If they continue to play like they have been, we have a reasonable shot at contending for the CCS title.”

The Lancers entered this week sitting atop the West Catholic Athletic League with a 9-0 record, 11-1 overall.

Last week, St. Francis routed St. Ignatius 189-224 on Monday at Los Altos Golf & Country Club, then sunk Sacred Heart Cathedral 185-201 on Thursday at Harding Park Golf Course.

“We had a very good day at Harding Park.” Ferriera said. “We shot five over par as a team, had two players at par and three players one or two over.”

Adam Sollers and Nick Knoll shared medalist honors by each shooting 36. Brett Sollers, Adam’s twin brother, had the top score Monday with a 36.

Adam, one of six seniors on the squad, has the best scoring average on the team. Brother Brett and fellow seniors Rick Doerr, John Colyar and Knoll have also been playing well, according to Ferriera, as has freshman Kevin Lozares.

St. Francis competed in the De La Salle Tournament on Monday, after the Town Crier went to press, and hosts rival Bellarmine next Monday at Los Altos Golf & Country Club.

Friday is the registration deadline for the Off the Glass Girls Basketball Tournament, scheduled for April 28 and 29 in gyms in Los Altos, Palo Alto and Menlo Park.

The tourney is for girls 10-17. For more information, e-mail wendy@offtheglass.org.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
