Los Altos splits
Los Altos came away from Thursday’s SCVAL De Anza Division meet against visiting Lynbrook with mixed results. The boys beat the Vikings 102.5-20.5 and the girls lost 69-56.
The Los Altos boys (3-2) were powered by double-winners Aaron Kaye, Joe Toney, Sai Pela and Royce Hurd.
Kaye won the mile (4:54) and 800 (2:08.1); Toney prevailed in the 120 hurdles (17.3) and 300 hurdles (42.8); Pela captured the shot put (42-2) and discus (133-9) and Hurd won the 200 (24.6) and triple jump (37-7).
Other Los Altos winners included Daniel Cheng in the 400 (54.2), Mark Horiuchi in the 100 (11.6) and the Eagles 400 relay team.
“The boys are young and talented and have a lot of depth,” Los Altos coach Lee Gutierrez said. “The girls have some very good athletes, too, but not enough of them. They need more numbers.”
Lack of numbers hurt the Eagles (1-4) Thursday, especially since runner/hurdler Kelsey Alloo was unable to attend the meet and runner Laura Perry was limited by a leg injury.
Perry still managed to win the two mile, though, with a time of 14:24. Becca Burnham claimed both the triple jump (31-6) and long jump (15-4). Also winning individual events were Heather Phillippe in the 300 hurdles (51.4) and Allison Miller in the 100 hurdles (17.1).
St. Francis dominates
The St. Francis boys kept their undefeated record intact with a 95-41 rout of visiting Mitty on April 4. The Lancers (4-0, 5-0) dominated the WCAL meet by winning 12 events.
Joey Fernandez captured three individual events for St. Francis. The junior won the 100 (11.06), 200 (22.72) and long jump (21-3). Teammate Ian Kenworthy swept the hurdles, winning both the 110 (14.81) and 300 (41.49) events.
That same day, the host St. Francis girls whipped Wilcox 82-42 in a De Anza Division meet. The Lancers (4-2) won nine events, including both relays.
Individual winners included: Christin Kenyon in the mile run (5:47.06); Elizabeth Martin in the 110 hurdles (17.67); Allison McGuire in the 800 (2:36.67); Sheila Nguyen in the 300 hurdles (51.73); Natasha Buxton in the triple jump (33-3 3/4); Kristen Mulenberg in the discus (106-0) and Annie Leemhuis in the long jump (16-3).

In what coach Sam Read called “their hardest competition in the last couple of years,” the Mountain View High girls edged Milpitas 64-63 last Thursday in an SCVAL El Camino Division track and field meet at Foothill College.
“The girls competition was so close that the coaching staff is still feeling the effects of the intensity (Thursday),” Read said a day after the meet. “The Milpitas girls are very tough and we knew we would have our hands full.”
Mountain View (4-0) made up for being outscored 50-32 on the track by dominating the field events, where it held a 32-13 advantage.
“Everyone on our girls team stepped up to the challenge and came up really big for the team,” Read said.
No one stepped up more than Dawn Maxey, who won three individual events. The freshman captured the 100-meter hurdles (16.69 seconds), 100 dash (13.06) and triple jump (34-feet-4 1/2). Maxey also ran the third leg of the Spartans’ victorious 400 relay team (51.54).
Monica Switick also scored big points for Mountain View by winning both the shot put (27-10 1/2) and discus (85-4). Linda Ansa claimed the long jump (16-6), while Rachel Walker prevailed in the 200 run (28.01) and ran the first leg of the 400 relay.
On the boys side, Mountain View picked up its first victory of the season with a convincing 74-47 decision over Milpitas.
The Spartans and Trojans tied on the track with 22 points each, but Mountain View (1-3) controlled the field events by outscoring Milpitas 52-25.
David Young and Ryan Roulette paced the Spartans with two individual wins apiece.
Young ran the two mile for the first time in three years and clocked a personal best 10:35.19. The senior also placed first in the mile (4:44.44).
Roulette swept the hurdles, winning the 100 (20.01) and 300 (51.13).
Other individual winners included Richard Turner in the 400 run (51.44), Guillermo Moreira in the 200 (23.61), Trevor Hooper in the long jump (17-11) and Jon Lam in the triple jump (37-7).
