The students at Springer Elementary School are feeling the effects of the power crunch and are doing something about it.

Last week, the Springer student council sponsored “Save your Energy,” a slogan contest about conserving energy.

Students were asked at a school wide assembly to submit ideas for slogans about energy conservation. The top two entries will be voted on by the student council and then reproduced, laminated and posted under light switches at the school as a reminder to conserve.

“We are also going to send two or three home with every child so they can put them in their bedrooms,” said Principal Robert Celeste.

The contest is also a highlight for Earth Month, which is celebrated in area schools during April.

“It’s a great time to do this project for Earth Month and for the energy problems right now,” said Melanie Freedland, sixth-grade student council president.

“Anyone can do it. Even the little kids understand how to turn off a light switch,” said Freedland. “It’s easy.”

Since it is a simple way to convey the message of conservation, it is hoped that Springer Elementary can set an example for other schools in the district.

“They can use our slogans or put up others, I hope we can be a model,” said Freedland.

“The slogans from the kids are a positive, and it is much better than buying the PG&E stickers that say to conserve,” said Celeste.

The slogans will be posted at Springer this week.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
