Spring Sports Summary

Track & Field

Mountain View came away with a split against Monta Vista last Thursday in a SCVAL El Camino Division meet in Cupertino.

The Mountain View girls prevailed 90-37 and the boys lost 73-54.

The Spartan girls (2-0) dominated the meet, placing first in 13 of the 15 events and sweeping both the long and triple jumps.

“The varsity girls were outstanding and posted some fine season-best performances,” Mountain View coach Sam Read said.

The Spartans had four double-winners: Dawn Maxey (100-meter dash, triple jump); Adriana Palmer (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles); Monica Switick (shot put, discus) and Rachel Walker (400, 200).

Maxey, a sophomore, set a new personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 32-feet-9.

Linda Ansa (long jump), Anna Carlstone (high jump) and Erin Hall (mile run) also won events.

The Mountain View boys (0-2) placed first in seven events, getting two wins apiece from Trevor Hooper and Jeff Audett.

Hooper set personal-best marks in both the long jump (18-5 1/2) and triple jump (36-7), while Audett distanced himself from the field in the mile (4:58) and two-mile (11:20.3) runs.

Other individual winners included David Young (800 run) and Joe Guzman.

Los Altos swept host Saratoga on Thursday, with the boys prevailing 69-58 and the girls squeaking out a 65-62 win in De Anza Division competition.

The girls’ meet was decided by the last event of the day. Los Altos went into the mile relay down two points, then the team of Heather Phillippe, Jessica Cusick, Kelsey Alloo and Laura Perry put them on top by winning the race in 4:20.1.

Alloo also won the 100 hurdles (17.2) and 300 hurdles (50.4). Other winners for Los Altos included Katharine Hill in the mile (6:03), Perry in the 800 (2:34), Becca Burnham in the triple jump (31-3) and Laura Battle in the shot put (27-4).

Perry also competed in the triple jump for the first time in two years and placed second by going 29 feet.

Sai Pela led the Los Altos boys by winning three events: the high jump (6-2), discus (125) and shot (43-3). Aaron Kaye claimed the mile (4:41) and two-mile (10:33), while Dawen Tsien won the long jump (19-5).

Boys Volleyball

St. Francis on Thursday suffered its first WCAL loss, as host Mitty prevailed 15-9, 15-12, 5-15, 15-9.

The Lancers (2-1, 9-2) were led by senior Adam Heintz, who had 13 kills.

Badminton

The Los Altos High golf team capped a busy week last Thursday by posting its best team score of the year.

The Eagles, playing their fourth match in as many days, defeated Palo Alto 194-201 at Shoreline Golf Links.

J.B. Sines and David Cline led Los Altos by each shooting a 1-over par 37. Ben Clark and Ian Sangster both shot 39s.

The win upped the Eagles’ record to 2-1 in the SCVAL De Anza Division and avenged a four-stroke loss to Palo Alto earlier in the week. Los Altos also beat Los Gatos and Monta Vista in non-league matches last week to raise its overall mark to 5-1.

“We’re playing pretty well,” Eagles coach David Blasquez said. “We’re happy to be where we’re at.”

Sines should be especially happy, as he posted the team’s best score in three of lastweek’s matches. The junior is also a key member of Los Altos’ swim team.

“He’s been leading us all year and is playing very well,” Blasquez said. “He’s an exceptional athlete.”

Los Altos takes on Mountain View at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, in a division match at Shoreline.

In other local golf action, St. Francis (4-0, 6-1) edged rival Bellarmine 190-193 March 19 in a West Catholic Athletic League match at La Rinconada. Individually, Lancers Brett Sollers and Todd Scanlin finished in a tie for first by each shooting a 37.

Despite a match-best 36 from sophomore Ben Choe, Mountain View lost 211-218 to Gunn Thursday at Shoreline. Both teams entered this week with 2-3-1 records in the De Anza Division.

After getting off to a 5-1 start, Mountain View on Thursday lost its fourth-straight match.

The Spartans fell 50-11 at De Anza Division power Palo Alto.

“The score was lopsided, but the matches were pretty close,” Mountain View coach Kelly Kuboyama said.

Two days earlier, the Spartans (1-4 division) lost 39-25 to visiting Cupertino.

Mountain View’s top boys doubles team of Tri Tang and Ann Vo won both their matches last week.
