Prep Baseball Wrap Up
Local high school baseball teams arguably produced one of the most productive stretches in recent memory last week with area teams winning at an eye-popping pace.
Los Altos and Gunn High were both a perfect 3-0, Mountain View was an eyelash from an undefeated week, St. Francis got back on the winning track with a pair of wins and Homestead continued its impressive play.
Los Altos (5-2, 6-8) extended its winning streak to four games after defeating Santa Clara, 5-2, Lynbrook, 14-4, and Mountain View, 9-8, in SCVAL El Camino Division play. The Eagles banged out 33 hits during the week and are 2 1/2 games behind league-leading Fremont (6-0) in the El Camino Division standings.
On Friday at Mountain View, Los Altos jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the fifth-inning then held off the pesky Spartans as Raul Ontiveros (2-1) earned the win and slapped a pair of doubles and two RBI’s in three hits. Matt Kramer added a double and three RBI’s in two hits for Los Altos, which had 12 hits in the game.
Will Norton had quite a day, for Mountain View by belting two doubles and knocking home four runs in three hits. Kevin Hsu added two hits for Mountain View.
Gunn (6-1, 7-1) tallied 29 runs in its three wins last week to remain a half-game behind Wilcox (6-0) in the SCVAL De Anza Division. The Titans whipped Milpitas, 4-3, Monta Vista, 18-10, and Los Gatos, 7-6.
Gunn exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a 10-10 tie against Monta Vista, then scored six runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 3-0 deficit versus Los Gatos. Jon Dishotsky (2-0) picked up the win over Los Gatos as Ray Hunter led the Titans with a double in two hits and three RBI’s.
St. Francis (3-1, 12-1) beat St. Ignatius, 8-3, and followed with a 4-3 triumph over visiting Riordan last Friday in West Catholic Athletic League play.
Matt Hollywood (5-1) scattered six hits in the complete win against Riordan and was helped out by a pair of hits from Mike Ribero and Danny McCarthy. Adam Turrey (3-0) beat St. Ignatius as teammate Dan Graviano ripped a double and produced two RBI in two hits.
Homestead (4-2) lost to Fremont, 9-3, then rebounded with a 7-6 win over visiting Palo Alto in El Camino Division play. Bryan Beres notched three hits for Homestead against Paly and was assisted by a pair of RBI each from Bryan Silverman and Israel Trujillo.
Tim Strumbel (2-0) picked up the win for the Mustangs. Pinewood lost to visiting Harker, 7-5 in nonleague action as the Panthers faced a 5-2 deficit after three innings. Kyle Scheppler had two RBI’s for Pinewood.
