More than 300 players participated in Mountain View Little League’s opening day ceremonies March 17 at the newly refurbished McKelvey Park.

The players - from T-Ball, Pioneer, Minors and Major divisions, respectively - were introduced to the crowd wearing their full uniforms.

Mountain View mayor Mario Ambra fired a strike on the ceremonial first pitch and received a commemorative plaque from league president Tony Figeac.

Following the ceremony, the Major League Red Sox opened the 2001 campaign with a 19-3 win over the White Sox. Both teams got off to impressive offensive starts; the White Sox Shane Buonosí and the Red Sox Armondo Munoz each hit a two-run homer in the first inning .

After that, the Red Sox pitching combo of Munoz, T.J. Sugimoto and Daryle Echer held the White Sox bats in check.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
