The Mountain View girls won 11 events, including two by Adriana Palmer. Palmer captured the 100-meter hurdles (17.72 seconds) and 300 hurdles (53.01).
“Freshman Dawn Maxey posted a quick early season mark in the 100 meters (12.97) and our core of distance girls continued their fine running from last year,” Spartans coach Sam Read said.
Trevor Hooper led the Mountain View boys, winning both the long jump (17-feet-7) and triple jump (38-11). Jeff Audett’s 11:15.40 in the two-mile run beat his previous best by 20 seconds.
The Los Altos boys and girls both lost at Gunn Thursday in De Anza Division action. The boys fell 67-60 and the girls lost 92-34.
Sai Pela claimed two events for the Eagles: the discus (128-1) and high jump (6-0). Other Los Altos winners included Shane Christine in the 400 run (51.6), Joey Toney in the 300 hurdles (43.0) and Aaron Kaye in the two-mile (10:52).
The meet featured three close finishes in the mile, two mile and 200 runs.
Kaye won the two-mile by inches and lost the mile by inches. Christine lost the 200 by inches. If Kaye and Christine had come out ahead in these races, Los Altos would have won the meet 64-63.
The Los Altos girls won only one event, as Rebecca Burnham captured the triple jump with a mark of 30-7.
Softball
It took 11 innings, but Los Altos beat host Santa Clara 2-0 March 14 in De Anza Division play.
The Eagles (1-0, 5-2) out-hit the Bruins 4-1. Jennifer Herrera had half of Los Altos’ hits, including a triple. Alyce Jorgensen earned the win for the Eagles, upping her pitching record to 5-2.
St. Francis won its De Anza Division opener March 14 with a 1-0 win at Los Gatos. Kelly Tealdi gave up only three hits to earn the victory. Mei Sausa had two of the Lancers’ four hits.
Boys Tennis
St. Francis blanked host St. Ignatius 7-0 March 13 to up its West Catholic Athletic League record to 2-1. The Lancers (8-1 overall) won every match in straight sets and sophomore Eric Chow breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles.
Los Altos took care of visiting Santa Cruz 5-2 March 13 in a non-league match. The Eagles (5-1) swept the singles, which included Reid Phillips’ 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1.
Golf
Los Altos beat out district rival Mountain View to win the inaugural Los Altos High Invitational March 12 at Laguna Seca Golf Course in Monterey.
Mountain View sophomore Ben Choe had the best individual score of the six-team tournament, shooting a 78.
Two days later, Los Altos opened De Anza Division competition with a 205-232 win over Cupertino at Shoreline Golf Links.
John Sines led the Eagles with a 37 and Matthew Patterson shot a 40.
Badminton
Mountain View dropped both its matches last week to fall to 1-2 in the De Anza Division.
The host Spartans lost 49-13 to defending league champ Lynbrook on March 13, then dropped a 43-17 decision at Gunn on Thursday.
“I think we played well against Lynbrook, better than the score indicates,” Mountain View coach Kelly Kuboyama said. “But we were flat against Gunn. If more of the players had ‘A’ games, we could have won.”
One of the Spartans’ few highlights in the Gunn match was the performance of Brian Xie, who won 15-4, 15-7 at No. 1 singles to remain undefeated.
Dhiren Mistry played at No. 1 against Lynbrook, prevailing 15-6, 15-4.
Lacrosse
Led by Anne Richards and Annika Larsson, the St. Francis High girls swim team defeated host Los Altos 106-77 last Thursday in an SCVAL De Anza Division meet.
Richards, a junior, captured the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.52 seconds and freshman Larsson won the 100 butterfly with a 1:04.65. The two then combined forces to help St. Francis (2-0) claim the 200 and 400 free relays. Richards swam the first leg in both races and Larsson the third.
Los Altos was paced by Meghan Sandlin, who won both the 200 free (2:00.41) and 100 back (1:05.55). Shannon Sandlin, Meghan’s sister, placed first in the 50 free (26.68).
That same day, the St. Francis boys routed visiting Los Altos 120-66 in a non-league meet.
Steve Lipinski won the 50 and 100 frees for St. Francis, which improved to 2-1-1 overall. Joey Dunn captured two events for the Eagles (0-2), taking first in both the 200 individual medley and 100 fly.
Despite a slow start, the Mountain View girls dominated host Milpitas 119-64 last Friday in SCVAL El Camino Division competition.
The Spartans (3-0) didn’t kick it into high gear until midway through the meet, according to coach Ben Murray. The coach said the turning point was the 500 free, as Laurie Gregg, Jessica Howard-Anderson and Jennifer Lesyna finished 1-2-3, respectively. Freshman phenom Brook Bishop provided another highlight for the Spartans by defeating last year’s CCS runner-up in the 100 backstroke by more than a second.
The Mountain View boys (1-2) gave a valiant effort with almost half its team out due to illness, but wound up falling 88-81 to Milpitas. The Spartans won eight of the 12 events, but didn’t have enough depth to prevail.
The Palo Alto Tomahawks varsity team defeated Lick 10-5 March 13 behind three goals each from Dan Yob and Bradley Ehikian.
Justin Skuce added a pair of goals and Gunn High’s Malcom Brown was one of three players to score a single goal.
