By Music for Minors workshop

Music for Minors will present “Rhythm Village: Ethnic-Influenced Music Improvisation for Children,” a March 20 workshop for music educators. Mary Knysh, a professional musician, will teach the session, which will be held 7-9 p.m. at the Hillview Community Center in Los Altos.

Participants will learn various ethnic-influenced music improvisation activities. For example, features will be call-and-response style singing, percussion ensembles, drum language, songs from Africa and the Caribbean, and conducting the village.

Music for Minors is a nonprofit organizaton, whose mission is to nuture in children a lifelong love of music. The program provides music classes in schools throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara counties where music might not otherwise be available.

Cost for the workshop is $15 general, $10 for students. To register, call 941-9130.

De Anza massage

Members of the De Anza College campus community and the general public have an opportunity to enjoy a therapeutic massage on Tuesday and Thursday mornings through March 22. To schedule a massage, call (408) 864-5645.

The clinic provides advanced massage students with the chance to demonstrate their skill and to explain the health benefits of massage. The majority of the students have two years of extensive massage training with emphasis in the areas of Swedish, international, sports and deep-tissue massage.

The cost is $5 for students with a current DASB card, $10 for faculty and staff, and $15 for community members.

Recreation Dept. Disneyland trip

The Los Altos Recreation Department invites junior high and high school students to spend their annual spring break in Southern California. The trip is scheduled for April 17-20 and includes Disneyland, the new Disney’s California Adventure and Downtown Disney, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Medieval Times Dinner & Tournaments.

The $230 cost covers admission to the three parks and the Medieval dinner as well as chartered bus transportation, lodging at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim and supervision.

High schools host open house

Mountain View and Los Altos high schools invite all eighth-grade students and their parents to register for the 2001-02 school year during their openhouse registration nights scheduled from 5-8 tonight and Thursday.

Counselors, program coordinators, teachers and staff will be on hand in the school gymnasiums. Students from the local middle schools should bring registration packets with them.

2001 Teen Job Fair planned

The 2001 Teen Job Fair, sponsored by the Mountain View Recreation Division, in conjunction with the work experience programs at Mountain View and Los Altos high schools, will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m., May 2, at the Los Altos High School quad area, and from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., May 3, at the Mountain View High quad.

More than 400 students are expected to participate at each job fair. Businesses interested in hiring teens for summer work are invited to participate.

Registration deadline is April 13, and there is no fee to participate. For registration information, call Eric Schill at 903-6404.

MVHS Casino Night benefit

The Mountain View High School Music Parents have scheduled their annual fund-raiser 7-11 p.m., Saturday, at St. Joseph’s School, 1120 Miramonte Ave., Mountain View.

“Casino Night 2001″ will provide an evening of fun, food, wine tasting and music with a Parisian theme, as well as blackjack, craps and roulette for prizes, including a weekend getaway.

The proceeds will benefit Mountain View’s music programs.

‘Music and Memories’

The Los Altos High School AP History Class is putting on this month’s history show focusing on the games and pastimes of early Los Altos.

Some of the topics featured will be crystal radio sets, model airplanes and scouting.

The show is scheduled for 2 p.m., March 24, at the Los Altos History Museum, 51 S.San Antonio Road.
