Do you resolve to get more involved in community life in 2001? The City of Los Altos seeks residents for a number of interesting and important committee and commission vacancies.

Inactive for some time, the Bicycle Advisory Committee needs members. They advise city staff and council on promoting bicycle and pedestrian safety, updating the city’s Bicycle Plan, prioritizing bicycle and pedestrian improvement projects, and identifying and prioritizing potential handicap access ramp locations within the community. Regular meeting times can be established by new committee members.

The Environmental Committee typically meets the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Hillview Community Center to create and implement environmental public awareness programs. Current areas of study include air quality and creek preservation. New committee members are needed.

The Los Altos Historical Commission advises the city council on historical matters including site designations and collection and preservation of local works of historical significance. The commission also oversees the History House Museum. Individuals knowledgeable in the field of construction and structural rehabilitation (i.e. licensed architect, engineer, building contractor) or urban planning are especially invited to apply. Applicants from these fields need not be Los Altos residents, but must have a place of business within the 94022 or 94024 Zip codes.

Volunteers are invited to apply to serve on the Los Altos Youth Commission, which advises the city council on matters relating to youth interests, youth concerns and the need for outreach services.

Members will be appointed for the 2001-2002 school year from grades 7 through 12. Applications for volunteer positions are available at City Hall, One North San Antonio Road, or may be obtained by calling the City Clerk’s Office, 948-1491. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend at least one meeting of the commission/committee of interest prior to applying. Contact City Clerk’s Office to confirm upcoming meeting schedule.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
