Los Altos nurse ministers in Romania
Los Altos resident Dawn Gemperle, a registered nurse, spent three weeks in October as part of a Global Volunteers team working in a hospital and schools in the Barlad region of eastern Romania.
The volunteers divided their time between teaching conversational English in middle and high schools in Barlad and nurturing “at-risk” babies in a small hospital in nearby Tutova.
The Eastern European country struggles with an overabundance of neglected babies. Many are placed in nurseries and foster-care institutions until their families can care for them; others are simply abandoned at the hospital or orphanage door.
For information on this program, call Dawn Gemperle at 948-3631.
