LA parking structure plans include multilevels, retail
Working from a rough design from consultants, the Los Altos Downtown Zoning Committee is homing in on a development model for a downtown parking garage.
Earlier this winter MIG Consultants and Watry Design representatives presented cost estimates and design mock-ups for possible forms the garage might take. But the committee briefly tabled assessment of those options to evaluate the idea of a single, grander garage project, spanning the three parking plazas on the southwestern side of town beneath street level with development above.
Los Altans of the Year Bob and Lois Adams: Retirement a full-time job for these community leaders
You probably won’t find Bob and Lois Adams sleeping in too many mornings. This active couple has proved as successful in community volunteering as they were running a business together for 18 years.
“We’re busy every single day,” Lois said. “I don’t understand people who aren’t.”
MV no match for LA
Don’t let the score fool you: Los Altos High’s 58-47 win at rival Mountain View really wasn’t that close.
The Eagles never trailed in Saturday’s boys basketball game and led by double digits for most of it. Up 33-16 at halftime, Los Altos extended the advantage to 26 points before pulling starters early in the fourth quarter. It was only then that the Spartans – still playing their starters – went on a run to close much of the gap.
The New Year is upon us, but the economic prospects are dreary for 2009, thanks to Wall Street excesses and congressional ineptitude. To put things into perspective for investors, I present a review of market fluctuations since the 1970s.
In January 1970, a bear market started that lasted until May. The large cap index fell 35.4 percent, but in May a bull market prevailed until January 1973. President Jimmy Carter’s less-than-astute handling of foreign policy led to that year’s oil embargo, and the bear market followed later in 1973.

‘Australia’ highlights epic landscapes of Northern Territory and Western Australia
I recently had the repeat privilege of addressing the Luxury Travel Expo in Las Vegas, which drew 3,000 travel industry professionals. In view of the just-released movie “Australia,” I shared my recommendations for the ultimate itinerary – visiting the Northern Territory and Western Australia as portrayed in the movie – which is certainly the path less traveled but well worth seeing.
20th Century Fox’s “Australia,” starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, is a romantic, adventurous epic set during the explosive pre-World War II period.
