The San Jose Earthquakes’ road woes continued last Saturday, as the Major League Soccer team fell 3-0 to the New England Revolution in front of 14,109 fans at Foxboro Stadium.

San Jose, which includes local residents Joe Cannon (Los Altos Hills) and Jamie Clark (Mountain View), is now 0-7-2 on the road.

The Earthquakes had to play the game without two of their top offensive players. Ronald Cerritos was left home due to a strained right quadriceps muscle, and Khodadad Azizi was with the Iranian National Team.

“We never seem to bring our ability away from the Bay Area,” Earthquakes coach Lothar Osiander said. “We couldn’t do anything right and that seems to be the way it is on the road for us. None of our players functioned according to the plan, and nothing went right from what we planned to do. End of story, that’s why you lose. We have to find a remedy to playing away from home or we won’t make the playoffs.”

The loss dropped the Earthquakes’ overall record to 3-7-4 overall. The Revolution, in first place in the MLS East, improved to 7-4-4.

The Earthquakes, shut out for the sixth time this season, got off a couple of nice shots early in the match.

Abdul Thompson Conteh brought the ball down in the box, but blasted a shot high with a defender draped over him in the 15th minute. Ian Russell nearly headed in a Richard Mulrooney cross in the 17th minute, but Revolution goalkeeper Jeff Causey dove to his right to make the save.

The Revolution took over shortly thereafter. Earthquakes goalkeeper Cannon was forced to make a couple of nice saves, including a diving stop off a free kick in the 26th minute.

That set up a throw-in, which resulted in a fluky Revolution goal one minute later on a shot that popped over Cannon’s head in the 28th minute. The Revolution scored two more times in the second half.

Cannon, a St. Francis High graduate, made six saves in the game.
