San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon of Los Altos Hills was named Major League Soccer’s Player of the Week April 3 for his performance the prior week. The St. Francis High graduate notched his fifth career shutout and posted a career-high nine saves in the Earthquakes’ 0-0 draw at Miami April 1. He was selected MLS Player of the Week by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.

Lifesavers

The Palo Alto Chapter of the American Red Cross is conducting lifeguard training classes this month at several locations in Mountain View and Palo Alto. The 33-hour course includes complete skills instruction, professional lifeguard responsibilities, first aid and CPR. A Lifeguard Training Certificate will be issued to those who successfully complete the course. Candidates must be at least 15 years old, be able to swim 500 yards and recover a 10-pound diving brick in at least 7 feet of water. For more information, call 688-0415.

Get into the swing

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
